Dear Friends,
Like the rest of the world, we are still reeling from the news of the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12. The extent of the devastation is still unknown, but it is great. While the epicenter of the earthquake was near the nation's capital in Port-au-Prince, the nerve-center of Haiti, the whole country is feeling the impact and will continue to feel the impact for a long time.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere where women are often the sole providers in families that survive on less than a dollar a day. Just 600 miles from our own borders, one in five Haitian children does not survive to the age of five and the rate of maternal mortality is fifty times greater than in the U.S - with a ratio of 680 maternal deaths for every 100,000 live births.
