The Portland Symphony Orchestra (PSO) announced today a partnership with Konbit Sante to raise funds for disaster relief in Haiti, and provide a place for the Portland community to come together and experience the healing power of music.
The PSO will open the Sunday, January 24 10:00 a.m. rehearsal to the public and donations will be collected at the door. Donations will also be collected at the 2:30 p.m. concert. Donations will benefit Konbit Sante’s Earthquake Response Fund. Konbit Sante is a Maine-based non-profit that has a partnership with the Haitian Ministry of Health to build capacity of the public health system in northern Haiti. For nine years, Konbit Sante staff and volunteers have been working with their Haitian colleagues on this mission. More information about Konbit Sante will be available in the lobby of Merrill Auditorium or at www.healthyhaiti.org.
The Sunday, January 24 PSO concert, “Head and Heart,” explores themes of suffering and healing. The program opens with Ravel’s haunting Pavane for a Dead Princess and closes with Headcase, a contemporary work documenting the composer’s recovery from a devastating stroke. Mozart’s stormy Symphony No. 25 rounds out the program.
